All store types can benefit from these signage best practices. Unattended stores rely on signage to help shoppers understand how to enter, shop and exit.
Not all signage is needed in all stores. Signage should ensure the shoppers know how to enter, shop and exit. Traffic levels, store design, gate configuration, and crew attendant presence are factors to consider when determining signage needs.
A best practice is to determine the effectiveness of store signage using the Customer Journey Signage Audit |
Store Entry and Exit Signage
Best Practice: Red "do not enter" decals on the floor indicate that shoppers do not enter through the exit turnstile on the right.
Best Practice: Signage on the turnstile is recommended as it is most likely to be read by a shopper
Best Practice:
1. The "exit" signage is prominent and tells the shopper early how they will exit.
2. The floor graphic is prominent and gives simple instruction on how to enter
3. The entry, overall is uncluttered and offers simple instruction that is likely to be read by the shopper.
Best Practice: 1. Bold and simple floor decals 2. All instructional signage is in the same pink color
Best practice: Large floor graphics can assure shoppers in a low density store. Avoid floor graphics in stores where traffic volume is expected to be heavy.
Best practice: In an unattended store, inform shoppers they can leave after making their selections. Also, make the "entry scan" reader obvious to help shoppers enter.
Best practice: Tell shoppers at the gate that a payment is first required. This reduced shoppers attempts to push through the gate
Best practice: Tell shoppers that they should enter only after providing payment. Shoppers should not enter the store with another group.
Best Practice: In the photo above, a shopper is attempting to scan product barcodes on the QR reader. The QR reader is intended for crew entries with the QR code. Tell shoppers that the QR reader is only for Crew Members. A simple label from a standard label maker can suffice.
Best Practice: Unattended stores with a risk of intrusions may consider placing signage to deter such behavior. Inform shoppers that they are on camera while shopping can deter intrusions.

Receipt Signage
Best practice: Ensure the QR code is available after the exit gate; We have observed that shoppers will wonder how to access their receipt after they have passed the exit gates. Do indicate that the receipt will be available "once processed." It is not immediately available.
Best Practice: Shoppers exiting the store with a stroller or in a wheelchair may not be detected by the IR sensor. In unattended environments, we recommend signage be placed to inform shoppers of how to activate the gate and exit.

In general, avoid: Too much instruction. Shoppers will not stop and read. Instructional signage in different fonts, colors and branding. This is confusing to shoppers. |
